Mercy Centre SERWIS event 2023
Learner Outcomes
-
Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
-
Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The Mercy Centre event hosted by the SerWIS club was an enriching environment to better spread and raise awareness for Operation Smile, a nonprofit charity that looks to reduce cleft lip occurrences throughout the world.

For this event, I was in charge of looking after the booth, which contained games and snacks for sale, for which, the funds would be allocated and donated towards Operation Smile. This CAS activity allowed me to develop my conversational skills, as I would have to advertise the charity to any passerby. Additionally, working at the booth helped me realise the importance of awareness and proper marketing in order to better address social issues throughout the world.
Farmers Market fashion walk 2023
Learner Outcomes
-
Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
-
Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
During the Wells annual farmers market in 2023, I agreed to participate in a fashion walk using donated clothing, as a creative and impactful way to promote the reuse of clothes. The event showcased how second-hand clothing can be stylish and sustainable, raising awareness about the environmental impact of fast fashion and encouraging people to make more conscious fashion choices.

For this event, I was one of the models responsible for walking the runway in recycled clothes. This experience helped me understand the impact of the fashion industry, and when preparing clothes by carrying boxes made me realise the sheer quantity of thrown clothes, as the boxes were in the dozens. Furthermore, I believe that the experience was inspiring to others, and showed how a simple event could spark conversations and encourage people to rethink their shopping habits.

During 2023's International Day, two of my Nepali friends and I set up a booth to sell momo; a traditional Nepali food. We did this to raise funds for the charity Teamseas, a charity started by famous YouTuber MrBeast, which aimed to help combat pollution in the oceans and seas.

The main challenge faced during this experience was the creation of the momo. Due to the spontaneity of the idea, and the limited budget and time we had, we were forced to work late to take a risk with the procurement of ingredients and hope that the sales would be able to not only cover costs but also raise enough profit that it would help contribute well to Teamseas.
This experience helped teach me discipline, as well as the effects of pollution on the seas, which we helped prevent by asking customers to return their plastic forks and paper plates when they were done eating so that we could recycle them.
